Land Use

One specific sector of activity for the LaMMA consortium involves a project providing continued support for the production and updating of a number of thematic maps belonging to the Region of Tuscany topographic database, particularly for archives considered strategic.

The project 'Thematic mapping of Land Use' involves the creation of a database structured into categories of land use extrapolated from the numerical archives of the regional technical maps (C.T.R., scale 1:10,000) in cover format (a vectorial geographical format). For on-screen photograph interpretation, digital images from the regional photographic archives were used (dated between 1978 and 2007).

For all categories featured in the key, the minimum mappable unit is 0.5 ha (5,000 m²), while for 'wooded areas' an extension no lower than 2,000 m2  was used, according to Tuscany Forestry Law n°. 39 from the year 2000.

All reclassification work is also aimed at creating a key made up of all items as featured in the ‘Corine Land Cover’ classification ) up to the third level of detail, whereas level 4 has been especially created from scratch for this project.

Information on land use is applied in numerous different domains for the planning and preservation of soil as a resource, and to assist the study of evolution of the landscape.

DATA MANAGEMENT
For the multidisciplinary management of data, the LaMMA Consortium follows the standards laid down by the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) using Internet Map Server, in order to circulate and share geographical databases in full compliance with the INSPIRE EU directive.
