Activities

The LaMMA Consortium, Environmental Modelling and Monitoring Laboratory combines CNR's scientific research skills with the administrative body's commitment to public service, to develop products and services for the local area and for the collectivity.

From studying phenomena to serving the region
LaMMA is strongly scientific in character. Its research mission, which gave rise to the La.M.M.A. laboratory in 1997, is still an important factor, and one which embraces all its spheres of activity. The study and observation of phenomena are the true heart of research, and these are the foundations on which the consortium builds its operations in order to develop solutions and tailor-made services for Tuscany and its environment.

The Consortium's main domains of competence are:

METEOROLOGY - Regional weather service and diffusion models
LaMMA is home to the Tuscany weather forecasting service, which constantly monitors atmospheric conditions and produces daily reports 7 days a week.  In addition to the regional weather forecast, LaMMA also provides “customised” services, with weather reports specifically designed for different categories of users.  Together with the air quality section, the meteorology department develops diffusion models to simulate the dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere.

TERRITORY -  Information systems for the management of environmental risks and resources
LaMMA integrates satellite observation with the use of geographic information systems, thus offering systems and tools to interpret the environment and manage its dynamics and evolution. Nowadays, geographical information products, such as risk maps, geographical databases and thematic maps, are indispensable tools for monitoring natural and man-made changes in the environment, with an eye to sustainable management.

SEA - Integrated sea monitoring
LaMMA performs research in the field of marine environmental monitoring, by collecting and processing measured and remotely gathered data, and applying marine meteorology, hydrodynamic and biogeochemical models. By applying the results of its research locally, LaMMA provides useful tools for the development of policies and strategies for the protection and control of the marine and coastal environment.

CLIMATE and ENERGY - Climate change and reduction of climate-altering emissions
LaMMA analyses the region's climatology from a range of spatial and temporal perspectives in order to better understand the changes taking place. LaMMA is also home to the Region of Tuscany's Focal Point Kyoto, which provides the region with support in its strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change. Focal Point Kyoto offers a more complete understanding of local environmental sustainability, integrating the carbon balance (emissions and absorption) with fact-finding tools useful in decision making for environmental and energy management and planning.
