Summary

The SICOMAR plus project (MARINE CONTROL SYSTEM), lasting three years, is the continuation of SICOMAR, and was funded under the 2014-2020 Interreg Italy-France Maritime Program. The project intends to address in an integrated way the issue of safety at sea and the control of the marine environment on a cross-border area of ​​extraordinary wealth, whose heritage has been strongly threatened in recent years by the increase in traffic of goods (especially dangerous) and of passengers crossing the Northern Mediterranean for work or tourism. The area of ​​interest is the Pelagos Sanctuary which is the main Protected Area of ​​Importance for the Mediterranean (SPAMI).
 

Description

SICOMAR Plus aims to improve the safety of navigation in the cross-border maritime space, in particular in the area of ​​the Pelagos Sanctuary.
The project, which is divided into several interrelated plans, intends to achieve the objectives set with the development of surveillance technologies and networks, the reduction of the uncertainty of the marine weather forecasting and marine circulation systems, the creation of support models for emergencies and risk management and services for safety at sea and environmental protection. 

Attività

The main activities concern: 

  • increase of the surface controlled by monitoring instruments (radar, satellites, in-situ instruments and / or integration of these systems); 
  • improvement of the quality of meteo-oceanographic forecasts; 
  • training and demonstration activities, such as piloting in hazardous marine areas; 
  • creation of tools for emergency management.
