Monitoring system
LaMMA is strongly participating at the creation of an integrated system for safety at sea and control of the marine environment of the cross-border marine area between the Ligurian Sea and the North Tyrrhenian Sea, which encloses the Tuscan Archipelago.
The observing system, which is  financed through several international projects, is based on the integration of in-situ measurements at sea (through various sensors and instruments) and remote measures from radar and satellites.

Measurements at sea

Marine parameters are collected during dedicated oceanographic cruses and also by various instruments placed in the Tyrrhenian Sea, including:

  • oceanographic buoys (for continuous and fixed monitoring of atmospheric and marine conditions);
  • Lagrangian current meters, buoys and profiles (which move with sea currents);
  • autonomous marine vehicles, remotely managed,  which measure data on many sea parameters recovered both on the surface and in depth (currents, water masses characteristics, characteristics , presence of contaminants).
LaMMA works with data collected from different instruments, some managed directly by the Consortium, others managed by different public institutions, (Regional Hydrological Service, ARPAT) and national organizations (OGS).

Satellite observations

Satellite data are mainly used for the estimation of sea surface temperature (SST), for the determination of chlorophyll values and for the detection of pollutants at sea. Thanks to sensors' architectures capable of exploiting data from satellite navigation signals, GNSS, both on land and on ships, it is possible to obtain information on the state of the atmosphere, very useful for the improvement of marine weather modelling.

Radar

As well as weather radars, which detect rain, some marine radars located on the coast allow the monitoring of a large area of the physical environment (waves, sea currents, any changes in the seabed) and - potentially - even the presence of vessels or oil spills. The marine-radar system provides useful data for the improvement of oceanographic and weather-marine forecasts as to increase environmental safety and monitoring.
